Int’l confce on disaster management held at JU

Savar, Dhaka – Focusing on disaster management through geospatial technologies, a day-long international conference, organized by ‘Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS)’ of Jahangirangar University (JU), for the first time held on the campus on Monday.At about 10:30am, VC of the university Prof. Dr. Farzana Islam inaugurated the conference, titled ‘Geospatial Applications in Disaster Management’ at the university’s senate hall.
Aiming at figuring out the possible techniques in combating disaster and climate change impact in Bangladesh, was the conference organized, where a total of 7 noted speakers along with 4 internationals, presented their informative articles concerning disaster management.
Md. Munir Mahmud, one of the participants in this conference, said: ‘I am verily benefited by today’s program as I got worthy idea about the use of geospatial technologies in better understanding the vulnerability and earthquake management. I expect the continuation of such events’.
Moderated by the Director of JU IRS, Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam, Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Dr. Md. Hasan Mahmud was the chief guest.
In his speech, Mr. Mahmud, MP, said: ‘Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country. So it’s in need of a long-term plan to combat disasters. In this regard, the universities might come up with recommendations to the state’.
Among others, VC of the university Prof. Dr. Farzana Islam, Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Abul Hossain and Treasurer Prof. Dr. Abul Khair addressed the program.
Wishing for the Institute, its Director Prof. Dr. Sheikh Tawhidul Islam, says: ‘This conference was just a bid to move forward with the Institute. In future, we are very hopeful to contribute to disaster management as well as its policy making for the gov’t, via generating high quality research papers here.’
From different parts of the country, a good number of faculties and students attended the program.
Mentionable, geospatial techniques comprises Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Techniques (GIS) and Geographical Information System (GIS).
