A court here has sentenced a young man to 17 years imprisonment in an
arms case filed in 2000.
The convict is Mohammad Selim alias Kala Selim, 35, son of Khan Ahmed
of Satkania upazila and a resident of Kusumbagh in the city’s Lalkhan
Bazar area.
Judge SKM Tofail Hasan of Joint Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 in
Chittagong announced the verdict with the convict in the dock on
Monday.
According to the prosecution, a microbus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw
in front of Chittagong Medical College Hospital on July 4, 2000.
Locals managed to seize the microbus and held Selim with a
foreign-made pistol and nine bullets.
They also gave Selim, a listed criminal, a good beating before handing
him over to police.
Paresh Chandra, a sub-inspector of the Police Station, later filed a
case in connection with the incident.
After investigation, police submitted the charge sheet in the case to
the court on May 9, 2001. The court framed charges against the accused
on April 10, 2002.
After examining the records and evidence, the court handed down 17
years’ imprisonment — 10 years for possessing an illegal arm and
seven years for bullets—to Selim. – UNB, Chittagong
