Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard on Monday conducted a drive in different coastal
areas of the Sundarbans to rescue 65 fishermen kidnapped by forest robbers.
Lieutenant Commander M Emdad Ullah, operation department staff officer at
Bangladesh Coast Guard West Zone (Mongla), said Coast Guard members launched a
drive to rescue the abducted fishermen.
They, however, could neither arrest any robbers nor rescue any of the victims as of 8.00
am.
Family members of a good many abductees were said to be appealing to Mohajans
(money lenders) to make arrangement of money to buy their freedom.
Earlier, the 65 fishermen were kidnapped by robbers in separate incidents from the sea
and the Sundarbans near Dublar char in two days—Saturday and Sunday.
The abducted fishermen hail from different areas of Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Barguna and
Bhola districts.
The robbers who also looted fish and net worth Tk 1 crore demanded Tk 1 lakh as
ransom for each of the fishermen to let them go free unhurt, threatening to kill them if
their demand is not met by a week. -UNB, Bagerhat
