A Dhaka court has granted police two days’ remand to question Ahmed Atique, diplomatic correspondent of the Bengali daily ‘Inqilab’ in a case registered under the Information and Communication Technology Act.
Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashiqur Rahman issued the order on Monday. He rejected bail prayers of News Editor Robiullah Robi and Deputy Chief Reporter Rafique Mohammad.
He ordered the two to be kept in jail. Police prayed for a five-day remand for Atique but the Court granted two days to interrogate him.
‘Inqilab’ on Thursday ran a report claiming that Indian troops had assisted the operations of Bangladeshi security forces in Satkhira.
The report also claimed that after permission from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had written to the Indian government asking for military assistance.
The government later in the day dismissed the claim as ‘completely false and fabricated’.
Police lodged a case under the Information and Communications Technology Act implicating Editor AMM Bahauddin, the Publisher, the Chief News Editor and a Correspondent of the newspaper.
Police had raided the newspaper office on Thursday night and detained the news editor, deputy chief correspondent and diplomatic correspondent and Senior Correspondent Afzal Bari.
Later, Bari was released, but the other three were shown arrested in the case. Investigation officer in the case Firoz Ali prayed for their remand on Friday. Lawyer Syed Ahmed Gazi argued for the accused.
