Hearing in the leave to appeal filed by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia against the High Court (HC) order in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, started at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday.
The five- member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md. Muzammel Hossain stayed the hearing till Tuesday.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan were present at the court during the hearing.Dhaka’s Special Judge Basudeb Roy on March 19, framed charges against former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and others in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
A revision petition was filed with the HC challenging legality of framing charges against Khaleda Zia and others on April 13 and the HC rejected the petition on April 23.
Khaleda Zia filed the leave to appeal against the HC verdict. In 2008, during the regime of the military-backed caretaker government of Fakhruddin Ahmed, the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against Khaleda and others.
Similar graft cases filed during that period against leaders of parties now in power have by and large been withdrawn on the plea of those being political in nature, a senior BNP leader told GreenWatch Dhaka.
