Abdur Razzaq Lecture: Dismal tone on roles of intellectuals

Dhaka, Oct 27 – Eminent short story writer Professor Hasan Azizul Haque on Saturday said 95 percent of students in Bangladesh share no connection with books and carry neither books nor pens even in the classrooms. The students are simply not interested to read. “The present education system of our country is totally ineffective and unproductive. Nothing good can be expected from this running education system, it is finished,” Haque lamented.
He came up with these remarks at a public lecture on “The Social Responsibilities of the Intellectual” held at the Abdul Karim Shahitya Bisharod Auditorium of Bangla Academy.
Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Foundation organised the lecture as the seventh instalment of the Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Distinguished Lecture Series.
“Our teachers are alienated from the society and they have no connection with the nation. As a result, we can’t provide productive students who can properly service the society,” said Professor Haque in his address today.
“The quality of our students is decreasing day by day. Now students don’t read any notebook or handbook. They just prepare themselves by reading their senior’s note and sheet,” he added.
National Professor Anisuzzaman chaired the program, where Director General of Gyantapas Abdur Razzaq Foundation Prof Ahrar Ahmad also spoke, among others.
In his speech, Professor Anisuzzaman said, “Intellectuals cannot ignore society’s problems and issues and remain a part of it. As a part of the society, we must raise our voice against any kind of injustice or discrimination we encounter.” – UNB
