ACC asks 3 AL MPs, families to submit wealth statements

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday served separate notices to three ruling Awami League leaders and their family members to submit wealth statements within a week, said an ACC official.
He said the concerned ACC enquiry officers sent the notices to former health minister AFM Ruhal Haque, his wife Ela Haque and their son Ziaul Haque, former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rhaman, MP, from Patuakhali-4, his wife Preeti Rahman, and Enamul Haque, MP, from Rajshahi-4 and his wife Tahura Haque to submit their wealth statements within seven days explaining how they amassed huge resources in the last five years.Earlier on Sunday, the commission took the decision to ask the AL leaders and their family members to submit their wealth statements after the enquiry officers placed primary probe reports to the commission, said the official.
ACC’s primary enquiry found that the three AL leaders accumulated huge wealth inconsistent to their known sources of income, and they also hide some of their wealth in the affidavits submitted to the Election Commission (EC) before the January 5 parliamentary polls, he said.
The affidavits submitted by several former ministers revealed that their annual earnings increased by 243 per cent and their wealth by 247 per cent while the earnings of state ministers increased by 464 per cent and their wealth by 459 per cent, sources said.
According to affidavit of Ruhal Haque, his bank balance rose by 10 times during the last five years. Most of the money was in the name of his wife Ela Haque.
Mahbubur Rahman became the owners of 2,865 acres of land, which was only 20 acres five years ago.
On January 21, the ACC assigned seven of its officials to enquiry into the wealth of several ruling AL leaders, including former and sitting ministers and MPs after publication of some reports that exposed large scale discrepencies between the wealth statements they provided before the 2008 and the 2014 polls.
