Narsingdi, June 12 – Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) claims to have cracked the rape and murder case of Sabina Akhter in Shibur upazila, saying they arrested the ‘killer’ who did sexual intercourse with the victim after killing her.
At a press conference at Narsingdi Press Club on Wednesday, commanding officer of Rab-11 Kazi Shamser Ahmed said they arrested Saiful Islam, 28, son of late Hanif Uddin of Dulalpur village in the upazila, on Tuesday when he ‘confessed’ to his crime.
He said Saiful took Sabina, 21, of Masimpur village to a banana orchard at Kazir Char Purbopara village on June 6 with a false promise of marrying her.
As he tried to violate her there, Sabina resisted it, the Rab officer said.
At one stage, Saiful strangulated the girl to death and had sexual intercourse with her body, he said.
Shamser said the youth returned home along with the mobile phone and vanity bag of the victim and went into hiding.
On June 8, locals spotted the body at the banana orchard and informed police who later recovered it.
Meanwhile, victim’s mother Afia Akhter filed a murder case with Shibpur Police Station against unidentified people.
A Rab team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Alep Uddin, started shadow investigation into the incident and on Tuesday, they arrested the suspect from Shibpur’s College Gate area.
According to the information gleaned from him, the elite force members recovered Sabina’s mobile phone from a bathroom of his house and her vanity bag from a nearby drain. – UNB
