Alleged smuggler killed in Shibganj gun fight with RAB

Dhaka, May 18 – An alleged smuggler was killed in a said ‘gunfight’ with the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5 at Tantipara Ghat area near 4 No.Beribandh under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district in the early hours on Friday.The deceased was identified as Md. Abdul Alim, 50, son of late Aftab Uddin Biswas of Nayalabhanga village under Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district.
Five RAB members were also injured during the gunfight, said company commander of Chapainawabganj camp of RAB Squadron Leader Mohammad Sayeed Abdullah Al Murad.
The company commander added that during an anti-drug drive, as a team of RAB reached Tantiparaghat area near 4 No.Beribandh under Shibganj upazila of the district at around 2 am, a gang of smugglers started firing towards RAB members. RAB members also responded to it. At this one of the smugglers received bullet injury. He was rushed to the Chapainawabganj sadar hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Later the dead body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
He said that Abdul Alim was an illegal drug peddler and also an accused in five drug cased recorded with different police stations in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi and Kishoreganj districts.
RAB also recovered two foreign-made pistols, two magazines, five rounds of live bullet, two covers of bullet and 6.7 kg hemp from the spot, Police said.
