Appeal hearing on Sayedee’s sentence May 2

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday set May 2 for hearing the appeals filed by both the prosecution and condemned Delwar Hossain Sayedee, nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, against the ICT-1 verdict on his 1971 Liberation War crimes.A six-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, passed the order following a plea for fixing the date for appeal hearings moved by Attorney General Mahabubey Alam.
Passing the order, the apex court also asked both the defence and the prosecution to submit the summary statements of the appeals. On March 28, the prosecution and the defence counsel filed appeals separately with the Appellate Division.
On February 28, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 condemned Sayedee to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War 42 years ago.
Sayedee was sentenced to death in two of the charges even though found “guilty beyond reasonable doubt” in eight. He was sentenced to death for the abduction, torture and murder of Ibrahim Kutti and the killing of Bisa Bali in Pirojpur.
The three-member tribunal unanimously held Sayedee guilty in eight of the 20 charges of crimes against humanity.
