The first press conference and introductory meeting of the newly registered Bangladesh Nationalist Forum (BNF) was held on Saturday amid arm twisting among its leaders and expulsion.The press conference held at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) auditorium in the morning, was marked by BNF leaders engaging in fisticuff centering on the announcement of party leaders and their posts. Immediately after the incident, BNF treasurer Moazeem Hossain Majlish was expelled.
The chaos was created when party president Abul Kalam Azad was announcing the names of party leaders dropping the name of the treasurer and he demanded an explanation for it.
An irate party president immediately expelled him and ordered his expulsion from the meeting room. Azad’s supporters forced Moazeem Hossain Majlis out of the auditorium. The press conference was postponed following the incident.
Earlier, the BNF president announced that his party would take part in the next general election. He said the BNF would field candidates in all the 300 constituencies.
Azad also informed that they have already sold 100 nomination forms among the prospective candidates. He said the BNF would pursue for holding talks between the two leaders—Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia.
BNF leaders—Prof Jahanara Begum, Arif Moinuddin, among others, were present on the occasion. It may be mentioned that the BNF was given registration ignoring the opposition from the BNP for “copying” of its party charter. – Staff Reporter
