Dhaka, Nov 6 – The Juktofront, a newly formed political alliance led by Bikolpodhara Bangladesh president Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury, yesterday placed a five-point demand before the Election Commission (EC) to consider for holding free and fair elections. They have demanded of the Election Commission not to delay in the announcement of election schedule.
The other demands include the Commission has to exercise its constitutional power and conscience for holding polls. If EC fails to do it, the nation will not forget them. It is undesirable to delay the announcement of polls schedule and such delay will create suspicion, confusion and disappointment in the nation. It is the constitutional and moral duty of the Commission to check any sort of undesirable situation in the election.
Juktofront has absolute support for holding free and fair polls. Juktofront and general people expect that the Commission will not bow its head under any pressure or intimidation.
Juktofront also demands after schedule EC ensure that the members of parliament should not be allowed to inaugurate any project or give any pledges in their respective constituencies and all facilities of the ministers and MPs have to be withdrawn. The posters, billboards and banners of the ruling parties should be removed.
The Juktofront leaders placed the demands while holding a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda at the Election Bhaban in the capital.
Earlier, a six-member delegation consisting of secretary general of Bikolpodhara Bangladesh (BDB) Major (retd) MA Mannan, presidium member of BDB Golam Sarwer Milon, chairman of Bangladesh NAP Jabel Rahman, Juktofront leader Mazharul Huque Shah Chowdhury, organising secretary of BDB Barrister Omor Faruk and vice president of BDB Mahmuda Chowdhury met the CEC.
After the meeting, MA Mannan told the media they had a cordial and open discussion with the Commission.
“We have told the EC that a Constitutional vacuum may create if the election schedule is delayed. If such a vacuum is created, an undemocratic force may come to power,” he added.
Election Commission has given time to Jatiya Party for talks on election issues at Election Bhaban at 11 am on Wednesday in response to the party application. – Staff Reporter
