Bail prayer rejected Rizvi sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent BNP Joint Secretary General  Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed to jail, rejecting his bail petition and the  remand prayer against him. Magistrate MA Salam of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate  Court passed the order in his jam-packed courtroom at about 11 am after hearing on both the remand and the bail pleas in the morning.
He was brought to the court amid tight security. However, the court allowed the prosecution to interrogate Rizvi at the jail during the next 10 days.
Earlier, on Nov 30, police sought a 10-day remand to quiz Rizvi Ahmed in connection with arson attack on a passenger bus at  Shahbagh in the capital.
Rizvi was shown arrested in a case of arson attack on a city bus at Shahbagh on November 28. Besides, he was shown arrested in other two cases filed with Motijheel Police Station and sought 20 days’ remand, while the court fixed December 9 for hearing on the remand pleas. Belal Ahmad, Executive member of the party was also arrested with Rizvi Ahmed fixed same date for hearing.
On Nov 28, a Mirpur bound passenger bus was torched at Shahbagh causing serious injuries to 19 passengers. Meanwhile, some of the injured passengers died.
Shahbagh Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana filed the case accusing 18 leaders and activists of the party. They were charged with open provocation, planning, conspiracy, abetment, perpetuation and spending money for the arson.
Other accused persons of the case are Acting Secretary General of BNP Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mirza Abbas, Gayeswar Chandra Roy, Vice President Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Amanullah Aman, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Dhaka City BNP member secretary Abdus Salam, City’s leader Salahuddin Ahmed, Jubadal General Secretary Saiful Alam Nirob, Chhatradal  President Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel, Joint Secretary Obaidul  Haque Nasir, Dhaka University Chhatradal President Mohidul  Islam Hiru, General Secretary Masud Rana, Chhatradal Dhaka  City (North) President Hasan Mamun, General Secretary Humayun  Kabir Rowshan, Shibir’s former President and Jamaat’s central  leader Shafiqul Islam Masud.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Belal Ahmed were detained by Detective Branch (DB) of police from party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on November 29. – Court Correspondent
