Bangladesh Bank reserve heist case report deferred

Dhaka – The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Wednesday deferred the date for submission of the investigation report in a case filed in connection with the alleged theft of Bangladesh Bank reserves to January 18, 2018.Magistrate AKM Main Uddin Siddiqui of the of the CMM Court fixed the new date as the report was not submitted on the 16th date yesterday. Earlier, on October 11, the same court fixed November 29 for submission of the investigation report.
The incident came to light when Philippine’s ‘Daily Inquirer’ ran a report on February 29 that the country was probing a money laundering incident involving cross-border electronic fund transfer. It said that US$ 101 million was wire-transferred on February 4 from the Bangladesh Bank’s US account to accounts in local banks. However, another report says that on February 5, cyber culprits removed eight crores 10 lakh US dollar from the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States. Later, an inquiry was conducted in the Philippines and so far Bangladesh got back only one and a half crore dollar.
Later, a probe committee was formed led by former Bangladesh Bank governor Farashuddin to investigate the incident. The probe committee said the incident took place due to the negligence of some central bank officials.
It has been learned that when the hacking incident took place, Dr Atiur Rahman was the central bank’s governor. – Special Correspondent

Chargesheet against Tariqul Islam in ACC case
Dhaka – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday submitted the charge sheet of a case filed against BNP Standing Committee Member and former Environment and Forest Minister Tariqul Islam for incurring a loss of Tk 21 crore to the national exchequer.
ACC Deputy Director and Investigation Officer of the case SM Shahidur Rahman submitted the charge sheet to the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Pronob Kumar Hui of Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the Investigation Officer of the case sought acquittal of Zafar Ahmed Chowdhury, former environment and forest secretary and former chief forest conservator M Anwarul Islam as the charges were not proved against them.
The case statement says that the accused persons illegally decided to confiscate different alleged illegal wood including sawmills of Chittagong Hill Tracts Zone. – Special Correspondent
