Bangladesh ex-judge sent to jail on militancy link charge

A court here on Sunday sent a former assistant judge, who is also an alleged leader of banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir Bangladesh, to jail in a case filed in connection with the recovery of jihadi books from his Chittagong city house in 2010.
Additional Metropolitan Session’s Judge Jannatul Ferdous passed the order when Sheikh Omar Sharif Al Maruf Russel, former assistant judge of Feni, surrendered before the court in the afternoon, seeking bail.The court also ordered police to submit his passport to the court on Monday.
A team of police recovered some jihadi books from the house of Omar Sharif at Jaker Hossain Road of Khulshi in the city on May 16, 2010. The law enforcers could not arrest him as he was at is workplace in Feni.
Police filed a case in this connection on the day. However, Omar Sharif went into hiding after the incident. – UNB
