Dhaka-The High Court yesterday directed the Bangladesh Bank (BB) to freeze the bank account of factory owner of ‘Tampaco Foils Limited’, which was devastated by a fire on September 10, leading to the death of at least 39 people. However, the HC said the owner can withdraw money from the bank account only for the payment of the salaries, compensation as well as for the other benefits of the workers.
In response to a public interest litigation (PIL), a vacation bench of the HC comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order.
The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the factory and the government to explain why they should not be directed to give sufficient compensation to the victims of Tampaco factory fire.
It directed the authorities concerned of the factories to submit reports before it in a month on how much money was given to the workers as salaries and benefits.
The HC also asked the central bank to submit reports in every two-month interval on how much money have been spent in which sectors.-STAFF REPORTER
