UNB, Sylhet
A local activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was snatched way from police by his fellow activists after his arrest on Monday night in connection with assault on journalists. Witnesses said a team of Detective Branch (DB) of police detained BCL activist Golam Rahman Rajon from a restaurant adjacent to Tialagarh point in the city at about 9.00am on charge of assaulting on-duty journalists during a clash between two groups of the district BCL unit at MC College on Sunday.
Some activists of the BCL led by its Sylhet district unit acting vice-president Hiron Mahmud Nipu obstructed the DB police team from arresting Rajon, which triggered an altercation between police and them.
At one stage, the unruly BCL activists snatched away Rajon from the police team.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner M Ayub of Sylhet said on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area to arrest Rajon.
But BCL activists put obstruction and snatched away him from police, he added.
A group of activists including Rajon attacked local correspondent Abul Ahad of Somoy Television and its cameraman Nawshad while they were collecting news of the Sunday clash that took place between Hiron Mahmud group and Pankoj group over establishing supremacy at MC College.
