BD-ILO ties going from strength to strength: Ryder

Dhaka – Director General of International Labour Organization (ILO) Guy Ryder on Sunday said the partnership between ILO and Bangladesh is going from strength to strength.
The ILO DG made the remarks when he made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Guy Ryder noted that things are progressing well in Bangladesh after the Rana Plaza collapse in Savar, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said while briefing reporters after the meeting.
He also observed that it is very much important to maintain good relations between owners and workers in workplaces.
The ILO DG lauded the amendment brought to the Labour Act to ensure workers’ welfare.
Listing various steps and measures taken by her government towards ensuring welfare of the workers, the Prime Minister said it has been laying emphasis on skill development and it ill make returns.
She said the government has also established leather institutes and fashion technology universities for the job seekers in the fields concerned while training is also being provided in differed fields to build skilled manpower.
Hasina said Export Processing Zones are being built across the country to produce export-oriented goods while Special Economic Zones will serve both the purposes of meeting the local demand and boosting export.
State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu, PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar were also present. -UNB
