No comment now over Article 116: Anisul

Dhaka – Mentioning that he has urged the Supreme Court to provide a copy of Chief Justice SK Sinha’s call for scrapping Article 116 of the Constitution, Law Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday said he would make comment on it after receiving the copy.

“I’ve read the Chief Justice’s speech in the media. Perhaps, his full statement was not published in newspapers. I’ve urged the Supreme Court to provide a copy of the statement to get a clear idea about it. I’ll make comments on it after receiving the copy,” he said.
The minister was talking to reporters after attending an award distribution ceremony marking the International Human Rights Day at Bangla Academy.
Replying to a query, Anisul said the government fully follows articles of the national charter relating to the independence of the judiciary. “The executive never interferes in the judiciary. We fully follow and respect the Article 116 (Ka),” he said.
He also said the present government is sincerely working to establish the rule of law in the country.
Responding to another query, the minister said the government is working to prepare the draft of a law to confiscate the property of convicted and identified war criminals.
About prisoners who have long been imprisoned without trial, Anisul said those responsible for this must face punishment. -UNB
