Bangladesh has been elected to the Executive Board of United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the term
2014-2017. Bangladesh received 152 votes in the voting that took place
today (Thursday) at the 37th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO,
said a Foreign Ministry release. Bangladesh became a member of UNESCO on
27 October 1972. This is the 6th time that Bangladesh becomes a member of
its Executive Board. Bangladesh actively participates in different
activities of UNESCO to promote its cultural image at the global level. In
1999, UNESCO proclaimed 21st February as the International Mother Language
Day in recognition to the supreme sacrifices of the language martyrs.
Bangladesh delegation to the 37th General Conference of the UNESCO is being
led by Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury. Other members
of the delegation include M Shahidul Islam, Ambassador and Permanent
Representative to UNESCO; M Monjur Hossain, Secretary, Bangladesh National
Commission for UNESCO; Shelley Salehin, Senior Assistant Secretary (UN),
Ministry of Foreign Affairs; M Waliur Rahman, First Secretary, Embassy of
Bangladesh in Paris; and Farhana Ahmed Chowdhury, Second Secretary, Embassy
