Bill for special allowance to SC judges placed

A bill was placed in Parliament on Tuesday with a proposal to provide judges of the Supreme Court monthly special allowances.
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq placed the bill titled Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Act, 2014.
With passage of the bill, the Chief Justice and justices of Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court will be paid a special allowance at the rate of 50 per cent of their monthly salary.The bill was sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs to place a report on its after further scrutiny and examination within three days.
This is the first bill which was placed in the 10th Parliament that began its journey on January 27 following the January 5 general polls.
Earlier in 2010, the salary of Supreme Court judges was increased by amending the law that was made effective since July 1, 2009.
According to the amendment, the monthly salary of the Chief Justice is Tk 56,000, salary of judges of Appellate Division is Tk 53,100 and salary of judges of High Court Division is Tk 49,000.
The bill explanation said the bill has been prepared and placed before the House since the government has decided to provide special allowance to judges of the Supreme Court at a rate of 50 per cent of their salaries. – Staff Reporter
