BNP candidate Apu arrested in hospital for Tk 80mn recovery

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members arrested Mia Nuruddin Apu, BNP’s candidate for Shariatpur-3 constituency in Sunday’s election, in a hospital in the city on Friday afternoon over the recovery of Tk 8 crore from Motijheel.
Commanding Officer (CO) of Rab-1 battalion Lt Col Sarwar-Bin-Quasem told UNB that Apu was shown arrested around 4:30pm as he was undergoing treatment at United Hospitals Ltd. He will remain under treatment at the hospital under Rab’s custody until doctors release him, the Rab officer said.
The BNP contestant came under attack while campaigning in Gosairhat upazila of Shariatpur district on December 24 last.Apu along with 25 other BNP leaders and activists were injured in the attack. Later, he was admitted to United Hospital for better treatment.
On December 25, a Rab-1 team arrested three people — Ali Haider, 24, managing director of United Corporation, Joynal Abedin, 45, GM (admin) of Amena Enterprise, and Alamgir Hossain, 38, office manager of Amena Enterprise -– from Motijheel and Gulshan areas along with Tk 8 crore.
The money was meant for distributing among voters to influence the national election, which was held on December 30 last, claimed Rab.During the recovery, Rab Director General Benazir Ahmed had said Tk 150 crore was distributed across the country in the last two months. Of the amount, Apu was given around Tk 3.6 crore, he had said.The Rab-2 filed a case with Motijheel Police Station over the money recovery.
