A BNP-backed candidate for Upazila elections has ‘boycotted’ the re-polling at a centre in Sirajganj’s Tarash.
Voters were threatened and stopped from going to polling station, the candidate Khandker Selim Jahangir alleged amid voting at a Binnabari centre on Monday.
Assistant Returning Officer and Tarash Upazila Executive Official Sharif Raihan, however, dismissed the allegations saying everything was normal at the centre.
Polling at the centre was suspended during the second phase of the Upazila elections on Feb 27 over allegations of rigging.“The voters are standing in queue to vote. There is no problem inside. The centre has adequate security, besides the presence of district and assistant returning officers,” said Presiding Officer Borun Kumar Mondol.
“Until 12:20pm, a total of 1,346 electorates have cast their votes out of 2,934 voters in the centre.”
No other party except Awami League could win from this centre since 1971, said the ruling party backed candidate Abdul Haque.
The BNP-backed candidate threw in the towel because of imminent defeat, he claimed.
Abdul Haque with his Pen and Inkpot symbol got 48,004 votes in 56 centres, out of 57, whose results were announced. Selim Jahangir got 47,340 on his poll-symbol Pineapple. – bdnews24.com
