BNP city unit chief Khoka placed on remand

A Dhaka court on Thursday placed BNP Vice-President Sadeque Hossain Khoka on a two-day remand in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station
of the city in connection with an arson attack on a bus at Shahbah on November 28.Magistrate MA Salam of Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court passed the order in his crowded courtroom after a lengthy hearing.
The court directed the authorities for a medical check-up and treatment of Khoka, before taking him on remand.
Earlier, BNP leader Khoka was handed over to Detective Branch (DB) of Police after he was shown arrested in two cases, one of which was filed for arson attack on a bus in Shahbagh area. The other case was filed with Ramna
Police Station also for arson attack on a bus in Malibagh area in the city on November 30.
In the other case, the same court passed order to send Khoka to jail rejecting his bail petition and remand plea of the prosecution. Police sought 20 days’ remand to interrogate Khoka in two cases.
The incident of Shahbagh caused the death of three bus passengers while 16 others were also burnt. Shahbagh Police filed the case against BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul, Sadeque Hossain Khoka and 14 other
senior BNP leaders. While, Ramna Police filed a murder case against 15 BNP leaders including Mirza Fakhrul, Mirza Abbas, Salahuddin Ahmed, Barkatullah Bulu and Sadeque Hossain Khoka in connection with the incident of Malibagh, that left a man dead and three injured.
The defence lawyers including Advocates Sanaullah Miah and Masud Ahmed Talukder while opposing the remand plea told the court that Khoka is quite ignorant about the two arson attacks. Besides his name was not included in either of the First Iformation Reports of two cases. He was implicated in the cases to take political revenge against him amid anti-Government political agitation of the BNP-led 18-party alliance for a poll-time non-party caretaker Government, they added. – Court Correspondent
