Opposition activists have clashed with police in Chittagong and vandalised a local Awami League office.
Witnesses said blockade campaigners took out a procession from Chittagong’s City Gate area and marched towards the AK Khan area on Thursday. They hurled a few handmade bombs at a police vehicle.Police chased them and lobbed teargas canisters. Thursday was the last day of the Opposition-enforced 6-day blockade. During the clash, several Opposition activists attacked the Pahartali (Ward No.9) unit Awami League office and torched its furniture.
“Known local henchmen of the BNP were behind the attack,” the unit’s Awami League General Secretary Zahurul Alam Jasim told bdnews24.com
Akbar Shah Police Station OC Abdul Majid said the law keepers chased the blockade supporters after they had hurled crude bombs at a police patrol car.
“At one stage, they ran into various alleys and attacked the Ward No.9 Awami League office which was shut,” he said.
No-one has been arrested over the attacks, added the OC.
Meanwhile, the Opposition has called for a fresh three-day blockade across Bangladesh starting from Saturday. – bdnews24.com
