Dhaka, Feb 13 (UNB) – Condemning the killings of people by the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Thakurgaon’s Baharampur village, BNP on Wednesday demanded a neutral investigation into the incident.
In a statement, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also questioned whose interest BGB is protecting by killing citizens of the country.
“Four people were killed and many others injured in a clash between BGB and villages along Betna border in Harirampur Upazila’s Baharampur area of Thakurgaon yesterday (Wednesday). I strongly condemn and protest the incident,” he said.
“It’s not lawful to kill anyone without trial. The prompt use of arms by law enforcers can’t be a sign of good governance. It’s rather part of desperation and unlawful acts,” the BNP leader observed.
Mentioning that India Border Security Force (BSF) has long been killing Bangladeshis in border areas, he said people along the border will have no security if now BGB also joins BSF in killing them. “A jungle rule will get a permanent shape in Bangladesh if the prevailing situation continues.”
Fakhrul said law enforcement agencies and administration are encouraged to indulge in unlawful acts when a government rules the country without people’s mandate as it lacks accountability.
He alleged that the law and order situation deteriorated sharply in the country since the government arranged a ‘grand vote robbery’ on the night of December 30.
“Law enforcement agencies are now seen expressing their unwillingness to lawful activities while the incidents of enforced disappearance, abduction, killing and repression on women and children have become everyday affairs,” the BNP leader alleged.
He claimed that social offenders are on prowl across the country as the law enforcers are being used for political purpose. “Social offences have now taken a terrible turn while fear and panic gripped people.”
Fakhrul said the country has plunged into the darkness of anarchy as the shedding of blood is now everywhere from the capital to remote frontier areas of the country.
“The current anarchic situation can’t be allowed to continue as repressed people’s pent-up anger may explode anytime. People will surely put up a united resistance against misrule defying all the acts of intimidation,” he warned.
The BNP secretary general demanded the government to ensure exemplary punishment of those responsible for the incident after identifying them through an impartial investigation.
