BNP and its associate bodies observed the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’ on Wednesday commemorating the ‘civil-military uprising’ in 1975.
Amid political turmoil, soldiers and civilians jointly freed then chief of army staff Ziaur Rahman from captivity in Dhaka cantonment on November 7, 1975, paving the way for Zia to come to power.Other political parties and different socio-cultural organisations also observed the day from different historical perspectives.
As part of the programmes, senior BNP leaders, led by party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, together with its activists placed a wreath at Zia’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city around 10am. They also offered fateha there and a munajat seeking salvation of Zia’s departed soul.The party hoisted party flag at its central office and all other offices of the party and its associate bodies early in the morning.
BNP’s all the units and associate bodies also observed the day across the country with various programmes, including discussion, photo exhibition and essay competition.The party is also scheduled to hold a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon marking the day.
While BNP and its alliances celebrate November 7 as the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the ruling Awami League and its front organisations consider it as the day of ‘killing of freedom fighters’. Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rob) observes it as the day of civil-military revolution.
