BNP to face split due to internal conflict: Quader

Dhaka, Jan 24 – The government has no intention to spilt BNP as the party will face it due to its internal feud, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said after observing a signing ceremony to upgrade 190-km long Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur national highway into four-lane at a cost of Tk 12,000 crore.
The agreement was signed between the government and the contracting firm at a city hotel yesterday. “BNP is now in a fragile condition. What’s the necessity for the government to split such a party? BNP has enemies within itself.
Leaders of the party have already started talking in contradictory tones and tunes,” Quader, who is also Awami League general secretary told reporters.
The minister said their government wants BNP lawmakers to join parliament as they want a strong opposition in the Parliament.
The Awami League surely do not consider BNP as a weak party though the party has become chaotic one due to its wrong politics and activities, he said, adding “if BNP now faces any split, it’ll happen only because of the party’s internal conflict. We need not divide the party at all.”
Quader is also skeptical about the existence of Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikyafront as he thinks BNP’s unity with the partners of the alliance will not last long.
The upcoming upazila elections will be competitive ones, even though BNP does not join the local body polls, he observed.
However, the 190-km long Elenga-Hatikumrul-Rangpur 4-lane national highway will be constructed with the financial assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The deal signed by chief engineer of the roads and highways department Ebne Alam Hasan and Mir Akhter Hossain of Bangladesh Leo Shiao Mou on behalf of their respective organizations.
Among others, road transport and highways division secretary Nazrul Islam, ADB country director Manmohan Parkash, project director Kazi Shahriar Hossain were also present during the agreement signing ceremony.
As per agreement, the Mir Akhter Hossain Ltd will construct 20-km of the highways from the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge to Hatikurul under package-6 at a cost of Tk 675 crore.
As per agreement the construction firm will construct seven bridges, 17 culverts, a flyover in Kodda, five underpasses and 12 bus-bay in the next 36 months.
Slow-speed vehicles will run in separate lane alongside 4-lane highways. The total 190-km long 4-lane highways will be constructed in 13 packages. – Staff Reporter
