BNP wants Muhith to withdraw his comment against it

BNP on Wednesday urged Finance Minister AMA Muhith to withdraw his comment that ‘BNP is not a political party at all’.“The Finance Minister at his post-budget press conference said BNP is currently not a political party. It’s natural to make such a remark by him as he is not a political personality. He was a big bureaucrat during Pakistan regime and later also in Bangladesh,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

The BNP leader was speaking at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office. The press meet was arranged to give the party’s formal reaction to national budget for FY 2016-2017. Fakhrul said Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad had made Muhith Finance Minister during his rule for his reputation as a bureaucrat. “Awami League also gave him the portfolio of Finance Ministry, and he took part in the national polls.”

“We didn’t expect that he (Muhith) would make such a comment about a party like BNP which had huge contributions to the country. He is a senior citizen. We hope he’ll withdraw his comment about BNP,” he said. The BNP leader also urged the Finance Minister to use political language about his political opponents instead of making unguarded comments.

On June 2, Muhith placed a Tk 340,605 crore national budget in parliament for the next fiscal year (FY17). In his party’s instant reaction to the budget, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi turned down the budget saying it is an extremely ‘reactionary and anti-people’ budget. As his attention was drawn to Rizvi’s comment, Muhith at his post-budget press conference said there is no existence of BNP now in politics. “At present, BNP is not a party at all, let alone the opposition.”
