Aslam on fresh remand

Dhaka-The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Wednesday placed BNP Joint Secretary General Aslam Chowdhury on a five-day remand afresh in a sedition case filed against him with Gulshan Police Station of the capital.Magistrate Mohammad Mahmudul Hasan passed the order after hearing on a seven-day fresh remand. Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Fazlur Rahman produced him to the court on completion of a seven-day remand. The court also rejected a bail petition filed on behalf of the BNP leader. Advocate Sanaullah Mia, counsel of the accused moved the petition. On May 31, a court placed Aslam Chowdhury on a seven-day remand in the case.
On May 26, DB Inspector Golam Rabbani filed the sedition case against Aslam Chowdhury under sections 120(B), 121(3) and 124(A) of the Penal Code. Plainclothes police detained him from Kuril Biswa Road area of the city on May 15 within hours of imposition of a travel ban on him for his alleged involvement in an anti-state plot. But, Aslam denied any conspiracy against the government although he allegedly admitted of his meeting Israel’s Likud Party leader Mendi N Safadi at a tea party in India.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, DB Inspector Golam Robbani appealed to the court to relieve Aslam Chowdhury from a case filed under section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Court Correspondent
