The Awami League on Saturday termed BNP’s announcement of one-point movement to topple the government as ‘hilarious’ and said such threats do not worry the ruling party.
“The BNP has made such announcements on several occasions in the past. It has become a matter of fun for us,” party’s Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif said.
“We wonder when the one-point movement becomes a ‘half-point’ one,” he said after meeting leaders of the ruling Awami League’s central committee and those of Dhaka and surrounding districts at the party chief’s Dhanmondi office.
The meeting decided to hold a rally on March 18 in front of the Engineers’ Institute in the capital. Prime Minister and also Awami League president Sheikh Hasina is expected to address the rally.
It has been decided that the ruling party and leaders of the ruling Grand Alliance would visit areas where houses, businesses and temples of religious minorities were attacked recently.
According to government figures, 67 people have been killed in the recent violence, including seven policemen.
Leaders of the ruling coalition would visit the affected areas in March, it was decided. The Awami League also decided to hold meetings of Imams of mosques across Bangladesh to resist Jamaat and its student affiliate, Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Hanif said the government would take measures to compensate and rehabilitate the attack victims based on the report submitted by the Awami League representatives.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister called for formation of anti-terror committees across Bangladesh to resist the Jamaat-Shibir attacks. Later, State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku said as per the Prime Minister’s directives, the local administration had been directed to constitute anti-terrorism committees in all districts, upazilas and localities.
The BNP Saturday alleged that the anti-terror committees were being formed to suppress the opposition, a charge the government denies. bdnews24.com
