Bogra Sonali Bank burglary: 3 high-ups suspended

Three high officials of Sonali Bank Ltd have been suspended in connection with the looting of Tk 30.80 lakh from its Adamdighi branch in Bogra district.
The action was taken against Sonali Bank General Manager (Head Office) Hasan Iqbal, its Rajshahi Divisional GM ATM Afzal Hossain and Bogra regional Deputy GM Abdus Samad for dereliction of duty, GM (Administration) of the bank Farnindra Trivedi said on Wednesday.He said the decision to suspend the three officials was taken at a meeting of the Board Directors of Sonali Bank held on Tuesday at the directive of the Finance Ministry.
Meanwhile, police in their overnight drive on Tuesday detained eight more people as they could make any breakthrough in the looting of Tk 30.80 lakh from the Adamdighi branch of Sonali Bank Ltd even after four days.
Inspector Jahurul Islam of Adamdighi Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case filed in connection with the burglary, said they detained the eight people from different places of the district for interrogation.
They are welding workers Biplab, Shahadat Hossain, Ashraful Islam and Rabiul Islam, Shahadat’s wife Afroza, local registry office employee Majibar Rahman, and truck drivers Noyon Hossain and Shahadat Ali.
With this, a total of 16 people have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers were verifying the information gleaned from eight other accused now on remand.
A police source said they could know that criminals from Chittagong district were involved in looting money from the Sonali Bank branch.
Barely in one and a half months of similar incident in Kishoreganj, burglars in a filmy style looted Tk 30.80 lakh from the Adamdighi branch of Sonali Bank in Adamdighi upazila after digging a tunnel into its vault.
The daring heist came to light on Saturday when employees of the bank entered the vault room in the afternoon.
Earlier on January 25, burglars had tunneled into the vault of Sonali Bank’s main branch in Kishoreganj district town and looted about Tk 16.40 crore.
The law enforcers, however, arrested the two burglars and recovered Tk 16.19 crore. – UNB
