BSMMU professor accuses Square Hospital of administering fake medicine

The High Court has ordered an inquiry into allegations of patients being administered spurious drugs at Dhaka’s Square Hospital.The court issued the order in response to a writ petition filed by Prof Dr AMM Zakaria Swapan, who alleged that he had been given fake medicines at the hospital.Zakaria is the joint secretary of Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (Swachip).The Bangladesh Legal and Service Trust (BLAST), a human rights body, is also a signatory to the petition.Prof Zakaria Swapan has accused the hospital of faking a French medicine used in his chemotherapy, leading to side effects.“The famous hospital where I had been undergoing chemotherapy administered two doses of a fake drug on December 10th and December 17th. The hospital faked a French medicine. The drug didn’t contain the cytotoxin it was supposed to have. This, despite the hospital charging Tk 18,000 per dose”, he said.
His lawyer Idrisur Rahman told journalist, the court had ordered the formation of an inquiry comprising the health secretary, the director drug administration and the president of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Association to probe the complaint.
