Clear evidence led to Shafik Rehman’s arrest: IGP

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque on Monday said police arrested journalist Shafik Rehman as they have clear evidence of his involvement in the conspiracy to abduct and kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

“We wouldn’t have arrested Shafik Rehman had he not been involved in the plot,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the 4th founding anniversary of the Criminology Department of Dhaka University at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium on the DU campus. Dhaka, (UNB news agency reported)

The IGP also said those criticising the arrest of Shafik Rehman in TV talk-shows should know police do not arrest anyone who has no involvement in any incident. He lambasted the media, saying they are trying to exaggerate the issue as they have no accountability these days.

Responding to a question after the programme as to why police arrested Shafik Rehman from his house introducing themselves as journalists, the IGP said police can take any shape from beggars to salesmen for any arrest. “But the Detective Branch of police arrested Shafik Rehman wearing DB jackets in this case.”

Presided over by Criminology Department Chairman Zia Rahman, the programme was attended, among others, by DU Social Sciences Faculty Dean Farid Uddin Ahmed and journalist Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul.
