A policeman and two other people were injured in a gunfight between police and carjackers at Tarabo in Rupganj thana of Naryanganj district on Tuesday night.The injured policeman was identified as sub-inspector (SI) Khandker Helal Uddin of Shyampur thana in Dhaka city.
Police arrested three of the carjackers including the two with bullet wounds from the spot.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Shyampur thana Abdur Rashid said four car lifters took away a private car from the Shyampur area on Monday night.
He said they had information that the car lifters along with the car were staying somewhere in Jatrabari area on Tuesday night.
Acting on the information, a team of Shyampur thana police led by its OC Abdur Rashid traced the carjackers in Jatrabari at about 11:25 pm on Tuesday.
But, sensing the presence of law enforcers, the carjackers in the hijacked vehicle started moving towards Kanchpur bridge on Chittagong Road. The law enforcers also gave them a chase.
When the car lifters reached near Sikder Petrol pump at Tarabo, they fired gunshots targeting the police at about 11:45 pm. Police also replied the fire, said the OC.
During the brief exchange of fire, SI Helal sustained bullet injuries. Police also arrested three of the gangsters and recovered the stolen car, while another carjacker managed to flee the scene, said OC Abdur Rashid. Injured SI Helal and the two carjackers were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition at about 1:30 am on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandker and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed visited injured SI Helal at the DMCH.
They also visited SI Russell of Pallabi thana at the DMCH. SI Russell was seriously injured in a road accident early Monday at the Mirpur-11 bus stand.
After visiting the two police officers, IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandker said both of them were injured while on duty. All possible treatment will be provided for their early recovery.
He said that Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital will be turned into such a hospital that will be staffed and equipped to provide all kinds of treatment to the members of the police force. UNB
