Country gradually going under militants’ control: BNP

Accusing the government of not playing its due role in tackling militancy, BNP on Tuesday said it seems that the extremists and militants are gradually taking over the country’s control. In a statement, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also alleged that militants are getting stronger instead of being eliminated.

“It seems the militants and extremists are taking over the country’s authority due to the inaction of the government that has no people’s mandate. Selected killings are being carried out across the country. The organised militants are gradually making the country as their safe haven,” he said. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

The statement was issued denouncing the killing of a Hindu priest by assailants at Sonaikhali village in Jhenidah Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning. Three people astride a motorcycle intercepted Anando Gopal Ganguly, 70, on his way to a temple and slit his throat after hacking him indiscriminately.

Protesting the murder, Fakhrul said the repeated attacks of militants on human life have now become irresistible. “Anyone is being subjected to their monstrous attacks anywhere every day.”A deep panic is now prevailing everywhere following the murders of people of different faiths, he observed.

Though a sense of insecurity is haunting the panic-stricken people, the BNP leader said, ministers are calming the law and order situation is good and there is no militancy in Bangladesh. Fakhrul said there is a question in public mind whether the government has any intention to get rid of the current situation created with the raise in militancy as it could not achieve any tangible progress in reining in extremism.

He also said people are getting seriously upset and frightened due to the governments’ sheer failure to control the militant acts. Fakhrul alleged that law enforcement agencies have apparently lost their capability to tackle the militants for being used by the government to snatch people’s voting rights, suppressing opposition and annihilating democracy.

The organised militant groups are now making law enforcers and their family members as their targets due to a serious weakness in dealing with this evil force.
