Court sends Apan Jeweler owners to jail

Dhaka – Three owners of Dhaka’s Apan Jewellers in three money laundering cases as they misused the privilege of their bail which they earlier secured from the High Court Division of the Supreme Court.The accused persons are Dildar Ahmed Selim, father of Banani double-rape case accused Shafat Ahamed and brothers of Dildar Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed.
Magistrate Md Nur Nabi yesterday issued an arrest warrant against Dildar in a case filed with Ramna Model Police Station on August 12 while Magistrate Nurunnahar Yasmin issued arrest warrants for Gulzar and Azad in two other cases filed with Gulshan Police Station on the same date.
It has been learnt that following the cases, all the three accused appeared before the High Court on August 22 seeking anticipatory bail in the cases while the apex court granted them bail for a period of four weeks after hearing.
The High Court directed that time will not be extended after the expiry of the period and the accused would surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka.
Following the order, the three accused submitted bail bonds to the CMM court but they did not appear before the court seeking bail in the cases even though their bail term was expired on September 21. For that their bail was cancelled and arrest warrants were issued against them.
It has also been learnt that the copies of all the arrest warrants have already been sent to the respective police stations for necessary action.
On August 12, customs Intelligence filed five separate cases against the three owners of the Apan Jewellers under Money Laundering Prevention Act with different police stations in the city. Three separate cases were lodged with Dhanmondi, Ramna and Uttara police stations while two other cases were lodged with Gulshan Police Station. – Special Correspondent
