‘Criminal’ hurt in Laxmipur ‘gunfight’ with cops

An alleged criminal was injured in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Balaishpur in Chandraganj of Sadar upazila early Saturday.The victim was identified as Deen Mohammad Jihad, chief of the criminal gang ‘Jihad Bahini’ and son of late Ruhul Amin of Razaramghosh village in sadar upazila.Police said a team of Chatkhil thana police arrested Jihad from a place in between Laxmipur and Chatkhil on Friday night and handed over him to Chandraganj Police Station.Later Chandraganj police along with Jihad conducted a drive in Balaishpur area to recover firearms around 3:30 am.Sensing the presence of police, associates of Jihad opened fire at the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back, triggering a gunfight.Jihad was caught in the line of fire and wounded while his cohorts managed to flee.Three police constable-Satyaranjan Chakma, Mirankanti Chakma and Nur Box were also injured in the incident.Later Jihad was rushed to Sadar Hospital while the constables were given first aid.However, Jihad claimed himself to be an activist of Joypur union unit of Jubo League, youth front of the ruling Awami League.
Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, superintendent of Laxmipur police, said Jihad was a listed criminal.He was wanted in several cases, including for murder, extortion and abduction, filed with Laxmipur Sadar, Chatkhil and Chandraganj police stations.A light gun and three rounds of bullet were recovered from the spot. -UNB, Laxmipur
