The government is working to bring changes in the existing Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to ensure the quick disposal of cases, said Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Tuesday. The Law Minister was addressing the inaugural function of the 27th Foundation Training Course for the newly appointed judges at the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI). “There may be changes in the CrPC to set time limits for investigation into cases,” he said. Besides, the minister said, provisions can be introduced to create separate calendars for all the stages when a criminal case is mutually resolved out of the court through discussions between the defence lawyer and the prosecution. “The changes will help reduce the time lag in the judicial process and regain the confidence of people in the judiciary,” he said. He also called on judges to perform their responsibilities with sincerity to keep the judiciary clean from graft. Later, responding to queries by reporters about the hartal called by Jamaat to protest the High Court verdict cancelling the registration of the party, Shafique said it contradicts the principles of the rule of law to protest a verdict given by the court through hartal or violence. “Everyone must abide by a verdict given by the HC, he said, adding that there is also the scope left to appeal against the verdict,” he added.
