Dandy Dying charge framed against Khaleda, others

A Dhaka court on Tuesday framed issue against BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia and 13 others in a case filed for loan default of over Tk 45 crore of Dandy Dying.
Judge Fatema Ferdous of Dhaka’s Money Loan Court-1 passed the order framing issues against the defendants. The court also fixed March 1 to record the depositions of the witnesses in the case. Earlier, Khaleda Zia’s counsel Barrister Fakhrul Islam sought time to defer the issue framing in the case. However, the court rejected the time petition and fixed the date for hearing. Barrister Fakhrul told the court that the case can not continue as per law.On the contrary, Advocate Zahangir Alam on the half of the Sonali Bank Limited told the court that the case was filed following the due process of law and urged for framing issue in the case.
Dandy Dying took a loan of Tk 13.14 crore from the Sonali Bank on May 9, 1993. The bank waived interests following an application of the defendants on October 16, 2001. On October 2, 2012, the bank filed the case against Tareque Rahman, late Arafat Rahman Koko and others as the defendants failed to repay the loan. On October 3, last year, the court appointed Advocate Abdus Salam to mediate in the case.
Other defendants include, Khaleda Zia’s late brother Sayeed Iskander’s wife Nasrin Ahmed, her sons Shams Iskander and Shafin Iskander and daughter Sumaiya Iskander, Tareque’s business partner Guasuddin Al Mamun and Mamun’s wife Shahina Begum and Kazi Galib Ahmed, Sharmila Rahman, the widow of Arafat Rahman Koko, and their two daughters. – Special Correspondent
