Dhaka–Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan police arrested a suspected leader of banned Islamic outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahidin Bangladesh (JMB), reportedly involved in Gupibagh six murder, from the city’s Shahid Faruq Road of Jatrabari on Thursday noon.Six people, including a local ‘saint’ along with his banker son, were slaughtered by miscreants at RK Mission Road of Gopibagh on December 21, 2013.
Acting on a tip-off, a DB special team conducted a raid at Shahid Faruk Road at around 2:35 pm and arrested JMB leader Abdul Gaffar, said Deputy Commissioner (DB-east) Mahbub Alam.
Gaffar was also wanted by DB in connection with PSDB ex-chairman Khijir Khan killing of Badda, the DC added.
Meanwhile, Investigation officer DB Inspector Kazi Gulam Kibria produced the JMB leader Abdul Gaffar before the court of metropolitan magistrate Molla Saiful Islam seeking 10-dsay police remand in connection with the Gupibagh six murder case.
After hearing, the magistrate granted a 5-day remand for interrogation.
Earlier, DB arrested four suspected JMB members in connection with the Gopibagh six murders. Though they had revealed that JMB was involved in the incident, they denied their involvement to the incident, he said.
But the detectives got the names of 7-8 JMB militants, including the name of its military wing commander Al-Bani alias Hujja alias Mahfuz alias Shahadat, who were involved in the Gopibagh six-murder incident, from another JMB militant Tarequl Islam Mithu.
The detectives arrested Tarequl from Tangail on October 14 over the Khijir Khan killing. Shahadat, however, was killed in a reported encounter with detectives in Dwipnagar area under Darussalam thana of Mirpur in the city early November 6.
Miscreants slaughtered self-proclaimed saint Lutfar Rahman Faruq, 60, his son Sanwar Islam alias Monir, 30, a banker, and the saint’s four followers – Mujibur Rahman, 30, Russell, 25, and Shahin, 25, and Manju, 30.
Lutfar’s younger son Abdullah Al Faruk filed a case with Wari Police Station on December 22 against 11 unidentified people for the murders. Later, the case transferred to DB for investigation.
