DB arrests Jamaat activist over death threat to politicians, intellectuals

Dhaka– Members of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami for issuing death threat to politicians and intellectuals from the city’s Tejgaon area on Tuesday night.The arrested Jamaat activist was identified as Abdul Haque.

Tipped off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the Jamaat activist, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy commissioner (media) Muntasirul Islam.

The law enforcers arrested him on charge of issuing death threat in the name of IS and ABT to politicians and intellectuals, including Professor Anisuzzaman, Professor Muntasir Mamun, Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Mizanur Rahman Khan.

DB sources said arrested Abdul Haque had been using phone numbers of several people including Faizur Rahman, Saleh Ahmed Fowad and Maulana Saad spoofing their mobile phone numbers keeping hides his name.

Later, he issued death threats to eminent personalities, including Joint Editor of the daily Prothom Alo Mizanur Rahman Khan, Prof Anisuzzaman, Prof Mohammad Jafar Iqbal, Ghatak Dalal Nirmol Committee leader Shahriar Kabir, finance minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith, agricultural minister Matia Chowdhury and former law minister Shafique Ahmed.

During preliminary interrogation, he revealed his involvement in issuing threats to the eminent personalities through mobile phones in a bid to push the country into a unstable situation, said a DB officer.
