Bangladesh has been elected vice-chair of the Commission for South Asia (CSA), United Nations-World Tourism Organisation in the meeting of Regional Commission for South Asia (CSA) held in Zimbabwe on Sunday. The commission’s two years term commence from one session to the next session of the Assembly. The news has been confirmed by the Ambassador Ikhtiar M Choudhury, attending the general assembly jointly hosted by the Zimbabwe and Zambia taking place in Victoria Falls and Livingstone City. Choudhury currently accredited to Spain as the Ambassador of Bangladesh and Permanent Representative to UN-WTO. The 20th General Assembly of UN-WTO was inaugurated by the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in the presence of Zambian President Chilufya Sata. Established in 1975 as subsidiary organ of the General Assembly, the South Asia Regional Commission of UN-WTO, one of the six Regional Commissions, enables member states to maintain contact with one another and with the Secretariat between sessions of the General Assembly, to which they submit their proposals and convey their concerns over the tourism development plan, programmes and cooperation. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the permanent members of the South Asia Regional Commission. Bangladesh’s election as the vice-chair in the Commission for South Asia (CSA), UN-WTO signifies the recognition of the member states and UNWTO to its growing interest in the field of tourism development and promotion.
