‘Don’t hike power tariff against public interest’

Different political parties and organisations on Sunday sent a letter to the chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (Berc) urging him not to hike power tariff ignoring public interest. In the letter, representatives of the parties and organisations who attended public hearing on increasing power price asked the Berc chief to instead hold public hearing in order to reduce production cost and price of electricity. They are of the view that it will go against the public interest if the government increases power tariff without taking people’s opinions into consideration. Signatories to the letters include Ruhin Hossain Price of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Bazlur Rashid Firoz of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, former VP of Rajshahi University Central Students Union Ragib Ahsan Munna, Mostaq Ahmed of Gonoforum, Iftekhar Mahmud of Nagorik Oikya and Jahangir Alam Fazlu of Workers Party of Bangladesh. – UNB
