Exhorting the Chhatra League activists to correct themselves, Awami League leader Mohammed Nasim on Sunday said the success of the ruling party and its President Sheikh Hasina largely depends on their reputation. “You’ll have to move ahead maintaining discipline, correcting faults and regaining reputation, or else, Sheikh Hasina and Awami League will fail … You must maintain discipline, if not, it’ll not only be harmful to us, but also for the people of the country,” he said. The former Home Minister came up with the remarks in the wake of widespread criticism of the activists of the ruling party’s student wing due to their violent activities across the country, particularly in educational institutions. Nasim was addressing a discussion meeting organised by Bangladesh Chhatra League Dhaka City unit (North) at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city, marking the National Mourning Day. Reiterating his party’s stance to hold the next polls as per the constitution, Nasim said, “We wouldn’t hold polls like that of February 15. The election will be held with the participation of people.” Pointing at UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who made phone calls to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Friday, Nasim said, “Cool down the situation in Egypt instead of expressing concern over the situation in Bangladesh.” Ban Ki-moon made the phone calls urging Bangladesh’s two top leaders to sit in a dialogue to resolve the dispute between the ruling and opposition camps over the nature of polls-time government in Bangladesh that cast a shadow in its next lection. Nasim said, “The UN secretary general and foreign diplomats are our friends. They want peace in our country. We want to say that the people of the country are in peace. They want an election.” Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, among others, spoke at the programme held with Bangladesh Chhatra League Dhaka City unit (North) president SM Rabiul Alam in the chair. – UNB
