Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the drives against militancy, terrorism and drugs will continue to make Bangladesh free from anti-social elements.
“The drives against militancy, terrorism and drugs will go on. We want to build a drug-, militancy- and terrorism-free Bangladesh,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this while speaking at an Iftar Mahfil arranged at her official residence Ganobhaban for lawyers.
Sheikh Hasina said the government wants to ensure the overall security of people. “There’ll be no room for injustice and unjust in the country.”
Hasina mentioned that the government has ensured the trial of war criminals and completed that of the killers of Bangabandhu.
She said Bangabandhu had started the trial of war criminals just after the country’s independence, but military dictator Ziaur Rahman stopped that after grabbing power illegally. “We’ve rid the country of the stigma through completing the trial of Bangabandhu’s killers and starting that of war criminals.”
The Prime Minister also said the court verdicts against some of the war criminals have been executed.
Briefly describing various pro-development activities of the government, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is now treated as a role model of development.
“We want to build Bangladesh as a developed, prosperous and peaceful country in South Asia,” she said.
Hasina said the G-7 countries have invited her to join their upcoming meeting to ne held in Canada.
“I’m going there tomorrow. They want to know the condition of Bangladesh, they want to know the magic behind the economic development of Bangladesh,” she said.
Talking about the 11 lakh Rohingyas taking shelter in Bangladesh, Hasina said Bangladesh has not only given them shelter but also providing them with food and medicines.
“The whole world and international organisations are with Bangladesh. Even we didn’t find the whole world beside us during the Liberation War. Some were beside us and some were not, but this time we got all of them with us,” she said.
Congratulating the pro-government lawyers for winning in different Bar elections across the country, she requested them to continue the winning spree in the coming days.
“Your victory tells that if we remain united we can win,” she said.
Hasina went round different tables set for the guests, exchanged pleasantries with them and enquired about their wellbeing.
Before the iftar, a munajat was offered seeking continued peace, progress and prosperity of the nation.
Prayers were also offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib and other martyrs of the August 15 massacre, martyrs of the Liberation War and the heroes of all democratic movements.
Pesh Imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Maulana Ehsanul Huq conducted the munajat.
Law Minister Anisul Huq, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, former Law Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Abdul Baset Mazumdar, Barrister Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Awami League Presidium Member Advocate Sahara Khatun, Law Affairs Secretary SM Rezaul Karim, former justice Mezbahuddin, Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, Barrister Fazley Noor Taposh were, among others, present on the dais.
Earlier, the newly elected office-bearers of Supreme Court Bar Association, Bangladesh Bar Council, Dhaka District Bar Association, Rajshahi District Bar Association, Sylhet District Bar Association, Gazipur District Bar Association, Dinajpur District Bar Association, Shariatpur District Bar Association, Lalmonirhat District Bar Association greeted the Prime Minister by presenting bouquets.
