DU authorities to sit with student leaders on DUCSU Sunday

Dhaka, Sep 15 – The authorities of Dhaka University (DU) will hold a meeting with all active student organisations of the university on Sunday to hold a discussion about Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) elections, shelved since 1990. On Wednesday, the DU authorities issued a letter signed by Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani to the presidents and general secretaries of all the student organisations to attend the meeting.
The discussion will be held at Abdul Matin Chowdhury Digital Classroom (old Senate Bhaban) on the campus at 11:30 am.
Meanwhile, the pro-BNP white panel teachers of Dhaka University expressed concern over the security of the party’s students wing Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders.
DU white panel teachers’ convener Prof ABM Obaidul Islam, Prof Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Prof Morshed Hasan Khan, Prof Lutfur Rahman met DU vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman and demanded to ensure the security of JCD leaders.
Contacted, Prof ABM Obaidul Islam told UNB that they came to know from various sources that pro-government student wing may attack the JCD leaders.
Therefore, as teachers “we informed it to the vice-chancellor so that the university administration can take measures to ensure security to the leaders of all student organizations,” he added.
Contacted, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) DU unit general secretary Md Saddam Hussain told UNB, “We always want Ducsu polls. We will provide all sorts of support to the university authorities for holding a peaceful election.”
Akramul Haque, central general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also welcomed the initiative and said, “Undoubtedly this step is praiseworthy, but equal political coexistence is needed to hold a peaceful and inclusive election.”
On September 12, fifteen former of Dhaka University students filed a contempt petition against the vice-chancellor, Proctor and treasurer for violating a High Court order that asked them to hold the Ducsu polls. – UNB
