EC appoints observers for suspended Gaibandha-3 election

Dhaka, Jan 24 – Election Commission (EC) has appointed its observers and monitoring persons to closely oversee the parliamentary polls of Gaibandha-3 constituency scheduled on January 27.
EC sources said the Commission on Wednesday appoint seven of its senior election officers to 20 unions under Sadullahpur and Palashbari upazilas of Gaibandha-3 constituency to closely monitor and observe the elections for two days starting before election day on 27 January.
About their duties, EC said the observers will instantly inform the election commission secretary through mobile phones or telephones about any kind of irregularities in elections like snatching ballot papers, degradation of law and order, barring voters to enter into election centres, casting fake votes or attempts to establish supremacy in election.
In addition, the observers will submit a report to the Election Commission and Returning Officer within 24 hours after their observation.
Meanwhile, EC has also appointed 10 of its officers to monitor the overall situation of the election before and after the election.
About their duties, EC said they will oversee whether the election materials have reached to the centres by January 26 and collect information about the security of the materials.
They will also monitor whether the election has been started by 8am. They will submit reports in writing to the Commission.
Besides, they will oversee any kind of irregularities while holding the elections and inform it instantly to the EC.
Election Commission could not be held the election of Gaibandha-3 constituency while holding polls on December 30 last year as one of the candidates of the seat passed away.
Then the Commission postponed the Gaibandha-3 constituency following the demise of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led 20-party candidate TIM Fazley Rabbi on December 20.
Later EC announced fresh date of election for the seat setting the day on January 27. – Staff Reporter
