Eight members of an organised gang of inter-district electric
transformer-lifters were arrested with four stolen transformers and a
truck here yesterday, police sources said.
Acting on secret information, a special police squad from Kotwali
Thana started chasing a Rangpur bound truck carrying the lifted
electric transformers from Syedpur from Kazirhat area near Paglapeer
on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway under Sadar upazila.
At one stage of the chase, the transformer lifters attacked police
near Mominpur area and police had to retaliate in self-defense
injuring two of the criminals Ali and Moshiar Rahman.
After a long chase, police arrested them, seized four lifted
transformers and the transformer carrying truck (Bogra Da-11-0502)
from Kalupara and Badarganj pourasabha areas under Badarganj upazila
in the district.
The arrested persons are Hasibur Rahman and Amjad Hossain of
Khalishpur upazila in Khulna, Kabir Hossain and Ali of Tarakanda
upazila in Mymensingh, Kamrul Sheikh of Kashianai upazila and Bablu of
Haridaspur in Gopalganj, Saiful Islam of Akhaura upazila in
Brahmanbaria and Moshiar Rahman of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur
districts.
Seriously injured transformer lifters Ali and Moshiar Rahman have been
admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital under police custody for
treatments.
After primary interrogation Sunday night, Kotwali police produced the
arrested transformer- lifters before a Rangpur court on Monday with a
remand prayer for further interrogation, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of
Kotwali Thana Syed Shahabuddin Khalifa told BSS.
A case has been lodged with Kotwali police station in this connection,
