Explosions, clashes mark Rajshahi strike

Bombs explosions and clashes with police marred the half-day strike enforced by the Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday in eight districts of Rajshahi.

The strike, that began at 6.00 am , was to protest against the arrest of the Jamaat’s’s Assistant Secretary General Mojibur Rahman and all Jaamat affiliates , including the student front Islami Chatra Shibir, supported it .

Officials said atleast 15 persons, including four policemen, were injured in the clashes during the strike. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Moniruzzaman said atleast 28 strike supporters were nabbed from spots where violence happened.

Police said four of their constables – Hazrat Ali, Pranab Ray, Tusher and Samad – have been hospitalized with injuries at the Rajshahi Medical College & Hospital.

Rajshahi Detective Police OC Alamgir Hossain and Motihar Police Station OC Sanaul Haque told bdnews24.com activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked policemen during a procession in Rajshahi’s Binodpur area around 7:15am.

“That was when they set tried to set fire to a police van,” the police officials said.

The Shibir activists also lobbed locally-made bombs and brickbats when police tried to disperse them, they said.

Police lobbed tear-gas shells and fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, the officials said.

The Shibir activists also set tyres on fire and organized protests at Rajshahi’s Hajir intersection .

Traffic was thin in the city and no long route buses departed from Rajshahi.

Police on Sunday arrested Rajshahi-1 constituency former Jamaat-MP Mojibur Rahman.

The Islamist party in protest enforced a half –day strike ( 6am-2pm) in eight districts of Sylhet on Monday .

He was arrested over the case filed on Dec 3, over ‘death threats’ at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The ‘death threat’ was issued at the opposition 18-Party Alliance on Nov 28.

Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad Chief AB Siddiqui filed the case at Chief Metropolitan Magistrates court. The court put Paltan police in charge of its investigation.

In the past few weeks, a number of Jamaat leaders like Mia Golam Parwar, Tasnim Alam and Abdullah Mohammad have been arrested.bdnews24.com
